Sleeping regularly is a constant struggle for many people. Nearly 10% of the U.S. population reports suffering from insomnia. A new drug that is in development and testing is showing positive signs that it can increase time spent sleeping. This is good news for insomniacs, but just how much additional sleep will they be getting every night. It turns out that while the new drug, suvorexant is effective, it is only adding on an additional 5%-13% sleep time. Now the importance of these small percentages is debatable. To a true insomniac the extra 20-30 minutes of sleep provided by the medication could be extremely therapeutic for them. However, many outside-of-the-study researchers are skeptical of the medications effectiveness all together. However, all researchers are excited about the medications potential to be developed into a strong combatant of insomnia. Suvorexant is designed to assist patients with chronic primary insomnia, which means patients who have regular bouts with sleeplessness resulting from no underlying medical conditions. It works differently than other available sleep aides by blocking specific chemicals in the brain called orexins which tell the brain to stay awake. This makes survorexant and great sleep aid candidate with fewer side effects. Surovexant is still clinically in trial and is looking for approval by the FDA. Many doctors are also suggesting that the new drug not be used dependently, that behavioral changes should still be made in order for insomniacs to get the sleep they need. Bad sleeping habits can create habitual insomnia, which doctors agree are the cases they see most often. However, they all suggest using the sleep aides to help make habit adjustments, but it is up to the patient to keep the healthy habit without use of medication. There are a number of Over-the-Counter sleep aides on the market and also some that are by prescription only. Vicks, the makers of the popular cold and flu medicine NyQuil, recently released their own sleep aid. Given the helpful sleeping properties of the NyQuil formula, many people used it against recommendations as a sleep aid. So Vicks made ZzzQuil, a non-habit forming medication designed to help you fall asleep and stay asleep. It is available in the traditionally shaped bottle as a liquid or in easy-to-take
liquicaps. Get either version of
