With summer already peaking its head, it’s important to protect you and your family’s skin from the harmful rays and free radicals of the sun. Here are four tips for an effective summer skin routine.
1. Wash up in the morning and at night
Sweat usually accompanies the heat, which can make even the driest skin greasy. Cleanse in the morning and at night with a less hydrating cleanser than you would normally use - like bar soap - this will help control the extra sebum your skin is producing.
2. Apply antioxidants
The sun produces free radicals and two different types of ultraviolet light - UVA and UVB rays. UVB is the ray from the sun that causes sunburn and UVA rays have a more long-term effect on the skin that can cause early signs of aging. Use an antioxidant with your daily moisturizer to help absorb these free radicals. Usually, the most effective antioxidants include Vitamin C, Idebenone and green tea.
3. Moisturize
Even if your skin is oily this summer, don’t skimp on using facial moisturizer. Most face creams feature hydrating ingredients that help skin cells function properly. Even if your skin feels and looks greasy, try switching to an oil-free formula or moisturize only after your nightly wash up.
4. Always apply sunscreen
Unless your daily moisturizer has protection of at least SPF 15, you should always pair a sunscreen with your skin care routine during the summer. It’s best to apply it every couple of hours and always reapply after sweating or swimming. Try thinking of sunscreen as the most important weapon in your summer skin arsenal to help protect your skin from the sun.
