Cathflo Activase (alteplase) is a thrombolytic medication used to restore the function of central venous access devices by dissolving blood clots. Primarily utilized in catheter occlusion, it directly breaks down fibrin within the clot, rapidly improving blood flow and device patency. This enhances treatment efficacy for patients receiving intravenous therapies. Cathflo Activase plays a critical role in maintaining venous access in patients, thereby reducing the risk of complications associated with blocked catheters and ensuring the continuity of essential medical treatments.

The Cathflo Activase (alteplase) Powder Vial 2 mg is an industry-leading thrombolytic agent manufactured by Genentech USA, designed meticulously for restoring functionality in dysfunctional central venous access devices (CVADs) by clearing obstructive thrombosis. With a sterling reputation in the medical community, Cathflo Activase embodies a reliable solution with a legacy of excellence in patient care, specifically backed by robust science and innovative technology.

Product Details and Features:

Active Ingredient: Alteplase, a well-verified fibrinolytic enzyme.
Presentation: Single-use vials containing 2 mg of sterile alteplase lyophilized powder.
Formulation Excellence: Lyophilized powder enables stability and rapid reconstitution, ensuring instant therapeutic application.
Manufacturer: Genentech USA, a name synonymous with innovation and precision in biotechnology.
Target Use: Specifically engineered for the restoration of patency to central venous access devices obstructed by blood clots.

Mechanism of Action:

Cathflo Activase exerts its therapeutic effects through adept catalyzation of the conversion of plasminogen to plasmin, which is a pivotal enzyme in fibrin breakdown. By fostering the dissolution of thrombotic occlusions, alteplase rejuvenates the patency of CVADs with efficacy, preventing line replacements and improving patient outcomes across clinical settings. By targeting fibrin specifically, Cathflo achieves high precision in clot breakdown while sparing other systemic components.

Directions for Use:

1. Reconstitution:

  • Reconstitute the vial with 2.2 mL of Sterile Water for Injection to obtain a final solution concentration of 1 mg/mL. Gently swirl until dissolved; do not shake.

2. Administration:

  • Withdraw the reconstituted solution into a syringe.
  • Instill up to 2 mg of the reconstituted alteplase solution into the occluded CVAD (volume should not exceed 2 mL).

3. In-Dwell Time:

  • Allow the solution to dwell in the catheter for up to 30 minutes. Assess catheter function by attempting to aspirate the contents.
  • If patency is not restored, a second 30-minute dwell can be attempted.
  • Confirm catheter function through flow restoration or aspirating blood.

Warnings:

  • Contraindications: Do not use in patients with known hypersensitivity to alteplase or any component of the formulation.
  • Bleeding Risk: Exercise caution in patients with coagulopathies, recent surgery, or active internal bleeding.
  • Exclusions: Not intended for systemic infusion to treat coronary or pulmonary thrombi.
  • Handling: Handle with sterile techniques to prevent contamination and potential complications.

Side Effects:

  • Serious Reaction: Anaphylactic reaction, though rare, requires immediate cessation of the treatment and administration of appropriate medical therapy.
  • Local Bleeding: Some patients may experience minor bleeding at the catheter site.
Systemic Bleeding: Carefully investigate any unexpected bleeding.

Cathflo Activase embodies a product that harmonizes safety, effectiveness, and function. Swiftly resolving obstructions in CVADs, it contributes vastly to less invasive and patient-friendly healthcare, focusing on improving well-being and procedural success rates. Always consult healthcare professionals for patient-specific recommendations before adopting new thrombolytic treatments.
