- Position the patient comfortably with the arm supported.
Apply Tourniquet:
- Place the tourniquet above the selected vein to make it more visible and palpable.
Select Vein:
- Choose a suitable vein, typically in the forearm or hand.
Disinfect:
- Use the antiseptic wipe from the kit to clean the chosen site in a circular motion. Allow it to dry completely.
Glove Up:
- Put on the sterile gloves provided in the kit.
Insert Catheter:
- Hold the skin taut to stabilize the vein.
- Insert the catheter at a 15-30 degree angle, bevel up, until you see a flashback of blood.
Advance Catheter:
- Advance the catheter slightly, then slide the catheter sleeve off the needle into the vein.
Withdraw Needle:
- Withdraw the needle while keeping the catheter in place. Dispose of the needle safely.
Release Tourniquet:
- Once the catheter is in place, release the tourniquet.
Secure Catheter:
- Use the provided gauze pad and transparent dressing to secure the catheter. Tape it in place if necessary.
Flush Line:
- Attach the IV line or extension set and flush the catheter with saline to ensure patency.
Observation:
- Monitor the insertion site for any signs of swelling, leakage, or infection.
