Vaginal Speculums

Vaginal speculums are medical instruments used during pelvic exams to aid in the visualization of the internal structures of the vagina and cervix. They are typically made of metal or plastic and are designed to gently separate the vaginal walls to allow for examination and collection of samples.
There are three main types of vaginal speculums:
1. Graves Speculum: This is the most commonly used type of vaginal speculum. It has two rounded blades that can be opened and locked in place with a screw mechanism.
2. Pederson Speculum: This speculum has a narrower and longer design, making it more appropriate for women who have a smaller vaginal canal. It may also be used for patients who have had a hysterectomy or have a tilted uterus.
3. Sims Speculum: This speculum has a curved shape and is used for examinations in a side-lying position. It is often used for women who have difficulty lying flat on their back, such as those who are pregnant or have back problems.
