Unna Boot Bandages are commercially prepared gauze bandages saturated with zinc oxide used to treat slow healing feet, heels or leg ulcers by decreasing the swelling in the leg. The gauze is covered with an outer wrap to provide support and compression. This bandage may be left in place anywhere from one day to up to 2 weeks.
Before applying an Unna Boot Bandage, wash your leg and the wound. An antibiotic cream, antiseptic or dressing may be applied over the wound before the unna boot is applied. The unna dressing should be wrapped from the toes to the knee and may be three or four layers thick. Drying time is usually about three to four hours.
Once you have applied the Unna Boot Bandage be sure to observe toes for change in color, (blue, darkening or white), the temperature (cold), swelling, or lack of sensation (numbness). Make sure to keep your leg elevated above your heart if possible when reclining or laying down and avoid sitting at a ninety-degree angle for too long. Your position affects the blood supply to your limbs.
If you are suffering from any of the symptoms mentioned above, do not ignore them. If you feel cold, see discoloration, swelling, numbness or severe pain know what to do. Elevating the leg above your heart while reclining or lying down will help some of the problems. You can also try gently unwrapping the outer dressing, pouring warm water over the Unna Wrap Bandage, or gently unwrapping the entire bandage.
