Addiction affects millions of people throughout the world in many forms.  A major epidemic that has swept our nation is the reliance on painkillers.  Many people suffer from ailments resulting in severe pain that cannot be cured.  Therefore, doctors prescribe medicine to ease the pain in the form of opioids such as Oxycontin (oxycodone), Percocet, and Vicodin.  What many may not know, is that these prescription drugs are actually a form of Opium, also know as Heroin.  That may be shocking to find out at 1st, but it helps explain the pandemic of Heroin overdoses throughout the US.

In 2014, heroin overdose deaths surpassed the number of car accident fatalities. According to the December report, more than 47,000 Americans lost their lives to drug overdose in 2014, a 14 percent jump from the previous year.

While drug abuse has been a widespread problem for decades, the typical user has evolved.  Something that only occurred in large cities and low income neighborhoods, is now hitting small towns and affecting affluent families.  It is well known that Oxycontin is a very addictive pain pill that got a lot of media attention in the past.  Parents that had prescription bottles in their medicine cabinets found out that their teenagers were stealing and taking the drugs or selling the pills.  While the control of Oxy may have gotten under control, the use of Heroin has skyrocketed.

Opioids are a chemically produced form of Opium (Heroin) used to treat pain.  Due to the abuse of these drugs, the FDA has finally decided to restrict the prescription of these drugs to try to deter a reliance on them.  However, because people are desperate to feel better they may turn to Heroin.  It sounds implausible, but it is a reality.  Therefore, to combat the growing epidemic of Heroin use, an antidote Naloxone (Narcan) was developed to help save lives.  Naloxone blocks the body's receptors to the brain that create an overdose and actually shut the brain down.  With one or two sprays of Narcan, the brain send signals almost immediately to revive the body, send blood to the heart, and start breathing again.

Due to the increase of overdoses and deaths in the US,  law enforcement has been trained to apply the Naloxone nasal sprays to unresponsive victims.  Mountainside Medical saw the need for a kit that was crucial in aiding police, EMT's and even parents dealing with accidental overdoses.

We provide :  Naloxone (Narcan) Kits, Educational Training Instructions and wall Posters for Police departments, and other drug addiction agencies.

While the consensus may be to not save people who have abused drugs and will continue once they are saved, think outside of the typical user. Read the newspaper, watch Dateline or the news, this is affecting every walk of life. With stricter laws in distributing pain pills to respectable everyday people, the use of Heroin will unfortunately increase.

The goal of this article is not to blame anyone, but to bring awareness to the public, so we can start working together to stop this epidemic and save more lives. Please free to share this page. Thank You
